Courting controversy

Going for some controversy here...Want to split beers in to two categories. Worth a damn is the category for styles I generally always enjoy, regardless of the brewer. Wretched Lolly water for those I generally dislike. This is not to say there aren't beers in the style I don't like (Stones Old Guardian is a great beer for example), but generally they don't agree with me.

Whadda ya think? Opinions please...

Worth a damn

Imperial Stout (the quintessential high ABV beer for me)

IPA and DIPA (hop centric and bursting with flavour)

Bitter and Premium Bitter (ESB) (balance and parity)

Porter  (deep, dark and wholesome)

Wretched Lolly Water

Barleywine (over the top and sickly sweet)

Dry Stout (bad memories of Guinness - watery)

Belgian Tripel (flavourless for the high ABV)

Marzen and Octoberfest (true lolly water)

over to you if you have an opinion on these or other styles!

  1. Likea good octoberfest when done right. Marzen alhough many would say is the asme beer, for metends to taste edifferent.
This could be the brewers, not the beer style. The beers could be made differently. Spaaten oktoberfest, very nice.
Fujisakura marzen on the weekend wasnt so nice. jsut tasted of caramel malts.
The rauch though was in fine form, as was the sakurabock. 8% and sweet but not too much so.
I dont go for brown ales, either. British pale ales and IPAs, along wiht their american cousins and high hopped DIPas rock, as do well made porters and imperial porters, but not the overly bourbon barrel flavoured.
A getnle coffee porter is a nice find, not the crazy espresso monsters that have coffee dominating everything and bad coffee at that.

  2. yeah i pretty much agree. brewer by brewer, some do styles better than others. And to be honest there is no such thing as a bad beer, just a variance in quality! thanks for the post mate I too like a mild coffee porter..I`m thinking of one now!
